This workshop was undertaken as part of a commission to produce both internal and external glass components for a large scale fishtank in the new Children’s Outpatients Department at Salisbury Hospital. Michelle worked alongside fellow glass artist Fabrizia Bazzo to plan and execute workshops for young adults with learning difficulties at Exeter House School in Salisbury.
In order to facilitate the design of the glass for the fishtank, students were asked to make fish tank maquettes using collage trapped within acetates. To capture the students’ imaginations they were first shown various mood boards and a DVD depicting the world beneath the sea. The brightly coloured fish and coral were translated by the students into individual collages. The collages were then constructed into fishtanks as a team, with more able students being encouraged to take on leadership roles to assist the less able students in learning the skills needed to construct the fish tanks. This gave all the students ownership of the finished works, and produced inspiration for Fabrizia and Michelle to use in their design.
